I just purchased a set of Callaway x-22's (4-sw) from E-bay for $300. I just received the clubs and the 8 iron had a 10 digit serial number with a bar code above the numbers (I've been unable to goggle the bar code). I called up Callaway and they did not have the serial number registered. The service agent said that it was possible that the clubs sent out from Callaway were not recorded and I should take my clubs down to the golf shop to determine if they are fake. My question. Is it possible for Callaway to send out clubs and not record the serial numbers? Thank you for your responses.

Appearance - Callaway clubs are very finely crafted and finished, the forgeries are not. Serial Number - X-22's have the serial number on a heavy, metal band on the 8 iron. If there even is a serial number on a particular set of irons, it can be quickly verified by Callaway as genuine, or fake.
The number may be a good one on the forgeries, but may be off of a completely different set of clubs. Paint - Callaway clubs have a very neat paint job with crisp lines.
The insert in the cavity on the forgeries is painted with a color that just doesn't match Callaway factory shades. Castings - Forgeries are very nasty looking with lots of pits, sharp edges and burrs. Shaft Mounting - Poorly mounted shafts protrude from the end of the hosel and are very rough in appearance. Callaway mountings are clean and free of excess epoxy. The shaft ends are also ground concave to match the end of the hosel.
Cavity inserts - The cavity inserts are poorly glued in on the forgeries and are frequently loose even when new. Number Stampings - The club numbers on the forgeries are poorly done, mis-aligned and uneven. All of this info pertains just to the clubheads. The shafts and grips look pretty good, but I don't know how to spot real from fake there. I googled how to spot fake x22s and that is what I came up with. Hope it all works out.

First, were the clubs brand new?
If you paid $300 for a set of Callaway X-22 irons I'd say that's an OK deal. Usually you can tell by just looking at the irons and at the shafts if they are fake. If you are as astute as I am in club ho'ing you'll immediately be able to tell the difference.
In fact, I can usually tell if a club is fake just by picking it up. I'm that good. I don't know why an 8-iron would have a bar code on it. It's not like you go to the golf shop and they scan your 8 iron to ring you up on the register.
I hate to tell you this but I think you got taken worse than an old lady buying life insurance from a man named Guido. On the bright side, you can show everyone your new bar code.
