Electric Asturias Fractals Raritan
Asturias leader Yoh Ohyama was born in Tokyo in 1962. His father is a painter who produced the cover art for Asturias albums. Yoh’s first encounter with progressive rock dates back to 1976 when he heard Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells.
After performing in an amateur band he found a position at a recording studio run by members of Shingetsu, which gave him an opportunity to acquire skills in professional music production. He eventually left the studio and has since built a long-standing career as independent composer, arranger, producer, and recording engineer. Asturias became an official project in 1987, with album releases of Circle in the Forest (1988), Brilliant Streams (1990), and Cryptogram Illusion (1993) through King Records, one of Japan’s major labels.

On these three albums Yoh performed on a number of instruments himself on most of the tracks, in the style of a solo project with guests, which included prominent musicians in prog circles such as Akira Hanamoto and Haruhiko Tsuda from Shingetsu, on keyboards and guitars respectively, and Yoko Ueno from Zabadak. All three albums are highly acclaimed as Japan’s answer to Mike Oldfield. This incarnation presented three live shows in a special formation with the two members from Shingetsu, along with a pianist and a drummer, while Yoh played the bass.
However, in spite of high artistic claim, the albums fell short on sales (at least to the extent expected by a major label) and, due to the declining interest in progressive rock from label management; band activity was curtailed prior to planning its fourth release. Nonetheless, Acoustic Asturias was reformed in 2003 as a permanent band for recording and live performance, with Yoshihiro Kawagoe on grand piano, Misa Kitatsuji on violin, Kaori Tsutsui on clarinet, and Yoh Ohyama on nylon string guitar. Musicians were selected from the classical music arena this time, in contrast to the rock musicians of the past. The music of new Asturias is an exquisite blend of classical elegance and the dynamic/dramatic development which characterized the original Asturias, topped off with superb all-around musicianship. The band released a mini-album in 2004 with new material, as well as reworking of classic Asturias repertoire. Mame 0 153 Rom Settings.
Although a short production, the album is an eloquent showcase of the high potential of the new Asturias. The album has been selling well and even topped the CD sales chart at Music Term, Japan’s premier online progressive music shop (), for four weeks. Press coverage has been favorable as well, and live shows in 2004 proved that the band has become one of the most popular progressive rock acts in the Tokyo area on par with KBB and Bondage Fruit. Asturias played at BajaProg2005 among with Artie Mestieri, Carl Palmer Band and Ken Hensley Band.
Asturias got fantastic reaction from the audience. Over the more than two decades of its existence, its founder, Yoh Ohyama, has developed Asturias into three different directions.
One of these projects is clearly influenced by Mike Oldfield’s music, which shows above all in the studio works, where Ohyama shines as a multi-instrumentalist. A second way shows an electric version of Asturias performing fusion / jazz–rock music, with a sound perhaps comparable to KBB. On the third way, Ohyama’s acoustic chamber rock ensemble plays neoclassical progressive music.
Still, whichever version of Asturias we are talking about, their instrumental music is always of the highest order. Valdez and Lines in the Sky signed for ROSfest 2018! We are pleased to announce that Valdez and Lines in the Sky will perform at the 2018 edition of the Rites of Spring festival. And in the spirit of being progressive, we have booked both bands to perform at the opening slot on Sunday. In 2018, our faithful can look forward to two 'sermons' on Sunday morning. Valdez is a quartet based out of Philadelphia in the US, featuring the talents of singer and guitarist Simon Godfrey (Tinyfish, Shineback), bassist Tom Hyatt (Echolyn), keyboardist Joe Cardillo (Cold Blue Electric) and drummer Scott Miller (Stone Jack Baller).
They released their debut album 'This' just after ROSfest 2017, and have a new album in the pipeline. Lines in the Sky are based out of Nashville, and was formed back in 2011, and consists of Jesse Brock (vocals, guitars), Bowman Brock (drums, percussion) and Ben McAnelly (bass).
They have two albums to their name so far, 'Hilasterion' (2014) and 'Parallel Travel' (2016), and their third album 'Beacon' is just about ready to be launched. Both bands will have a 45 minutes long set, with a 10 minute long break in between bands so that the crew can prepare the stage and equipment for the second band. And as we are talking about Sunday morning, we rather suspect that a slight break in between bands might be a welcome feature for those in the crowd that have been a bit too festive the night before. This is the first time we have given the “Church of Prog” slot to two bands to share. Both of them are stellar up-and-coming bands, hence this novel solution for booking both of them. We look forward to enjoying both of their performances.
Of course, both bands will appear at the signing table after the concert. Valdez: Facebook: Lines in The Sky social Media: Facebook. FREE District 97 HOLIDAY DOWNLOAD ON WEDNESDAY! Brand X signed for ROSFest 2018 We are delighted to announce that Brand X has been signed for ROSfest 2018 as the Friday night headliners. UK band Brand X is one of the great band of progressive rock, in the view of many the band that defined what jazzrock was all about as seen from a progressive rock point of view. They initially appeared back in the mid 70's, and in this initial phase they also featured the skills of Genesis drummer Phil Collins.
Brand X went on hiatus in 1980, with five studio albums to their name. A sixth album appeared in 1982, but then the band was quiet until they reformed in 1992. A further two albums were released in their second phase, alongside an archival release. A new spell of hiatus then followed in 1999. In 2016 Brand X reformed for the second time. This latest incarnation now consists of John Goodsall (guitars, synthesisers), Percy Jones (bass), Kenny Grohowski (drums, percussion), Chris Clark (keyboards) and Scott Weinberger (percussion).
In 2017 the band have been on a reunion tour and released a new live album. Brand X is one of the giants in the annals of progressive rock as well as jazz. A true headliner act, and we are looking forward to seeing them perform for our audience on May 4th 2018. Brand X – Official Facebook. Threshold signed for ROSfest 2018 We are happy to announce that UK band Threshold have signed for ROSfest 2018 as the Saturday night headliners. Formed by Karl Groom 29 years ago, Threshold have been an active live and studio band ever since and has been one of the key bands that have explored progressive metal in such a manner that it has also appealed to those whose taste in music have been more geared towards progressive rock. They have explored their particular take on progressive metal on 11 studio albums so far, the most recent of which is the double album, 'Legends of the Shires', that was released through German label, Nuclear Blast, in 2017. As with many other bands, Threshold has had their fair share of line-up alterations over the years. Founder, Karl Groom (guitars), and Richard West (keyboards) are the constant elements.
And as of 2017, they are joined by Glynn Morgan (vocals), Johanne James (drums) and Steve Anderson (bass). Morgan, who was the band's vocalist in the mid 90's, recently returned to the band following Damian Wilson's departure. James and Anderson have been mainstays since 1999 and 2003 respectively. Threshold has built themselves a reputation as a hard working band that deliver quality performances as well as quality albums.
They are a high status band, perhaps even more renowned in metal circuits than in the progressive rock universe, but they have three decades worth of experience and a solid reputation as a band that will always deliver. Threshold is a natural headliner for a festival such as ROSfest and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing them hit the stage as the Saturday night headliners on May 5th 2018. Threshold official website: Threshold FaceBook.
